Q1How does target size work?

The image is decoded once, then quality is binary-searched between 20% and 95% — about seven encodes — to find the highest quality that stays under your limit. If even the lowest quality is too big, it tells you to limit the width instead.

Q2Why is the slider comparison sometimes disabled?

It overlays the result on the original, so both must have exactly the same pixel dimensions. If you changed the max width, use the side-by-side view instead.

Q3Why does compressing a PNG change nothing?

PNG is lossless, so the quality parameter has no effect. In “keep format” mode a PNG is automatically re-encoded as WebP, which is the only way to actually shrink it without switching to a lossy format.
